It is perfectly natural to be fearful of certain things. It makes sense that this is an important way our minds protect us from situations which may cause us harm. However, when those fears and anxieties become irrational and as a result prevent you from enjoying certain activities it would make sense to seek help to overcome them once and for all.
A phobia is probably best described as an irrational fear. It is much more than just feeling scared of something, or just not liking something; a phobic reaction has no sense attached to it.
Even the person who is suffering from the phobia will tell you that they don't understand WHY they feel in that way, they just do.
The phobic feeling builds and can be very similar to a panic attack. The person feels an strong feeling of dread and fear and an overwhelming desire to get away from the situation.
They feel very emotional but cannot say where those feelings are coming from; just that they feel filled with panic. Only once they are away from the situation or object that triggers these feelings does the sufferer begin to feel better.
It makes no difference if friends and family say: "everything is alright", or "just tell yourself you are not scared", or "there is nothing to be scared of." It is irrational and reasoning doesn't help.
There are hundreds and hundreds of phobias that people suffer from the well known ones like fear of flying (aerophobia), heights (acrophobia) and spiders (arachnophobia) to less well known ones like the fear of the number thirteen (triskaidekaphobia). Almost any phobia has a name.
Panic attacks are very common. Those who suffer with them will recognise some or all of the following:
The heart beats alarmingly quickly, like palpatations, and you become aware that you are breathing more quickly; it's as if you couldn't get enough air. There can be a cramped feeling across the lower part of the diaphragm and a tingling sensation, sometimes accompanied by hot or cold flushes to unexpected parts of the body; finger ends and the like. You can feel almost rooted to the spot by on overwhelming feeling of panic.
It is possible to overcome panic attacks and phobias using Hypnoanalysis.
